The key upgrade in this year’s iPhone 12 is that it supports 5G cellular networks.
On Tuesday last week, Apple launched iPhone 12 with the key changes being – 5G, a flat-edge design and a mini model.
The 2020 options arriving in stores in October and November are as follows:
- iPhone 12, priced at $800, with a 6.1-inch screen and two cameras on the back.
- iPhone 12 mini, priced at $700, a smaller-form iPhone with a 5.4-inch screen.
- iPhone 12 Pro, priced at $1,000, at the higher end of the price spectrum, a 6.1-inch model with extra camera features.
- iPhone 12 Pro Max, priced at $1,100, a 6.7-inch model with extra camera features.
Key features:
5G capability: 5G networks allow faster download speeds, less delay and the ability to support a lot more devices. They’re now supported by the iPhone. A 5G iPhone could be very fast, with Verizon saying its ultra-wideband network clocks peak downloads of 4 gigabits (yes, giga!) per second on the device.
New designs and materials: With iPhone 12, Apple brings back the flat edge design of the old iPhone 4, which people find less slippery. The iPhone 12 mini is smaller than iPhone 8 with an edge-to-edge screen. The iPhone 12 is 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11. The iPhone 12 also has a new kind of glass that is four times more resistant to cracking during falls.
Camera improvements: Apple’s Night Mode is now available with the front-facing camera to allow for better selfie quality at night. Night Mode has also been added to the ultrawide angle camera. The higher-end versions of iPhone 12 have a telephoto lens on the back. iPhone 12 pro has a lidar sensor which helps improve depth focus especially in low light situations.
Environmental benefits: iPhone 12 does not come with headphones or a charging brick which is good for the environment, as there are already over 700 million corded white EarPods in the world, and 2 billion Apple power adapters. By dropping these from the phone package, Apple can also now make its boxes smaller which is a part of its long-term commitment to a net-zero climate impact across its businesses by 2030.
